On April 9, a 6.3 magnitude earthquake in Iran struck the town of Kaki, 60 miles southeast of Bushehr in southern Iran. According to BBC News, 10,000 people in 50 villages are thought to live in the affected area. Two villages have reportedly been completely leveled. More than 700 homes have been damaged, leaving over 200 families displaced and in urgent need of assistance.
These communities are in our thoughts and prayers. Today, Moms Against Poverty signed a joint community letter to President Obama requesting permission to send earthquake relief funds to Iran. Meanwhile, Moms Against Poverty’s sister NGO in Iran will be visiting the region to assess the level of aid required and how we, as a community, can best support these families in crisis.
