Imagine living in a country where one in four people live below the poverty line surviving on less than fifty cents a day, where three percent of children die before the age of five. Nepal suffers these hardships and more and is one of the poorest countries in the world with high rates of disease and malnutrition. To make matters worse, the coronavirus pandemic has hurt countries like Nepal more than most. Their largest industry is tourism, which has suffered greatly in the past months because international travel virtually ground to a halt. Many of these Nepalese have no savings or safety net to fall back on, and they need our help.
MAP, in collaboration with Sunsar Maya, is working to provide food and hygiene products to orphaned children and families in Nepal on a monthly basis. We operate through two centers in Jorpati and Mahalaxmi, Nepal, distributing packages containing soap and two weeks’ worth of rice, lentils, and noodles. We also coordinate with local government officials, thanks to the help of Sunsar Maya, to identify local families in need so that we could offer support when possible.
The centers in Nepal also serve as an educational institution and hold literacy and teaching classes on a regular basis. By mentoring teachers, we can empower the Nepalese and give them the skills to help thousands of more children than we could teach ourselves. Our mission is to build pathways out of poverty and give children the opportunity to make a better life for themselves.
