Thalassemia Treatment and Prevention Program Costs

  1. Treatment Costs: The treatment process for children undergoing a bone marrow transplant typically lasts between 9 and 15 months. The cost ranges from $5,750 to $8,700, covering only medications, hospital fees, and doctor consultations. In addition to these medical costs, the family faces significant challenges in meeting other essential needs, such as food, clothing, and hygiene supplies. These require an additional budget of $4,300 to $5,200. Addressing these non-medical expenses is just as vital as the treatment itself. The average cost of the treatment is approximately $12,000.

  1. Prevention Costs: We aim to allocate $750 to raise awareness through public communication for prevention purposes. Additionally, by allocating $2,000, we will cover the expenses of basic blood lab work (Complete Blood Count) for approximately 1,000 young couples before marriage in underserved areas with a high prevalence of thalassemia to identify potential carriers of the thalassemia gene. Furthermore, we will allocate $3,000 for genetic lab work during the first trimester of pregnancy for 30 cases in which both parents are identified as thalassemia gene carriers in these underserved areas. This will help identify embryos affected by major thalassemia, providing parents with the option of legal abortion. The total cost for this prevention program is $5750.

We assure all esteemed Donors that a complete report on the treatment process of each sick child will be provided regularly within six months.
