Migrant Workers in Nepal: Struggling to Survive Amid Economic Crisis

In early July, as COVID-19 cases surged in Nepal, the government reissued a strict nationwide lockdown. This followed an initial lockdown from March 24 to May 28, during which cases remained under 1,000. However, when restrictions lifted on June 15, thousands of migrant workers in Nepal began returning home from India, the Middle East, Malaysia, and other countries—only to face a new crisis.

The Economic Crisis for Nepalese Migrant Workers

For years, Nepal has relied heavily on migrant labor, with millions of Nepalese working abroad to send money home. However, with the global economy in recession, remittance drop in Nepal has left more than 56% of the country’s 5.4 million households struggling to survive (Source: Al Jazeera).

Migrant workers who once risked dangerous jobs abroad to support their families are now returning home to poverty and homelessness. With little or no savings, they cannot afford food or basic necessities.

Poverty Crisis in Nepal: How Families Are Coping

The poverty crisis in Nepal has worsened due to widespread job losses and limited government support. Many families rely entirely on remittances, and the sudden loss of income has left them vulnerable to hunger.

To combat this growing crisis, Moms Against Poverty continues to provide food and hygiene supplies to struggling families and orphanages in Nepal. In partnership with Sunsar Maya, Moms Against Poverty ensures that essential aid reaches the hardest-hit communities.
