Delfarib Fanaie co-founded Moms Against Poverty 20 years ago in Burlingame, CA. Since then, the non-profit organization has fed, and provided access to education and medical care to millions of children around the world in over a dozen countries including her motherland Iran. She frequently visits the sites where the poor benefit from their aid. For her latest visit, Delfarib flew to Iran in June to see the work being done firsthand.

The trip, unfortunately, took a turn for the worst when a conflict broke out leading to an economic standstill. Delfarib was caught in the middle, forced to cut the visit short and evacuate Iran. She was able to see one orphanage before having to turn back around – but not before witnessing impoverished people struggle to provide for themselves and their families as they had lost their job as day laborers during the height of the conflict.

“With bombs overhead, there was no looting. In fact, people in Tehran lent one another a helping hand”, said Delfarib Fanaie, Principal Founder of Moms Against Poverty. “During these tense moments, when I was desperate to find transportation, a compassionate cab driver who gave myself and Board Member Maryam Naghipour a ride, refused to take money. Instead he insisted that at a time of crisis, we should just take care of one another. As simple and loving as that. I am in awe of the kindness of the Iranian people even in the toughest of circumstances and want to give back when they need it most.”

Delfarib was compelled by conscience to stay in Iran through the turmoil and uncertainty but was convinced by the team to come back to the U.S. where she could do more. Moms Against Poverty remains committed to providing food packages to families struggling with ongoing food insecurity. The 18th Annual Benefit Gala at the Metreon in San Francisco on September 27th gives everyone who feels heartbroken, frustrated, or inspired to make a difference.
