A Nationwide Hunger Crisis is Unfolding

The COVID-19 pandemic has severely worsened food insecurity in America, particularly in already underserved communities. In many areas, even families who can afford groceries are struggling to find food. Panic buying and overwhelmed supply chains have left stores with empty shelves, and access is even more limited in neighborhoods that already lacked resources before the pandemic.

For example, Washington D.C.’s Wards 7 and 8, with over 150,000 residents, have just three grocery stores. In San Francisco, more than 54,000 students relied on daily free school meals before closures began. The shutdown of schools and workplaces has pushed thousands of families into crisis, unable to secure even basic meals for their children.

Moms Against Poverty Responds with Urgency

Moms Against Poverty has a long history of addressing hunger relief during COVID-19 and beyond. Through its nationwide Nutrition Outreach Program, MAP partners with over 35 schools and community centers to support vulnerable families.

In direct response to the pandemic, Moms Against Poverty funded 10,000 hot meals for children in the San Francisco Unified School District. A grant of nearly $30,000 helped secure emergency food aid for students who lost access to school meals and whose families lost jobs due to the economic fallout.

Expanding Reach to the Nation’s Capital

In Washington, D.C., Moms Against Poverty has partnered with the D.C. Central Kitchen to meet the growing demand for food. This organization provides essential nutrition programs for low-income families, operating mobile feeding sites, delivering food to grocery deserts, and supporting five public schools.

With thousands of children now depending on the Kitchen for meals, the organization anticipates a funding gap of nearly $500,000. The collaboration with Moms Against Poverty is helping to bridge that gap—but more support is urgently needed.

How Nonprofits Fight Food Insecurity in the U.S.

As unemployment rises and businesses close, more Americans are turning to nonprofit organizations for help. How nonprofits fight food insecurity in the U.S. often depends on rapid response, strategic partnerships, and community engagement. Moms Against Poverty is expanding its efforts to continue feeding children and families most at risk.

This includes school meal programs, food distributions in underserved neighborhoods, and support for organizations like D.C. Central Kitchen that are on the front lines of the crisis.

Support School Meal Support During the Coronavirus Pandemic

The fight against food insecurity in America is far from over. The pandemic continues to affect millions of families, and Moms Against Poverty is committed to expanding its reach in the coming months. However, they cannot do it alone.

With your support, MAP can continue to provide essential school meal support during the coronavirus pandemic and ensure that children across the country do not go to bed hungry.
