As the Coronavirus spread globally, COVID-19 relief in Iran became an urgent priority. Iran has been one of the hardest-hit countries in the Middle East, with climbing death rates and a healthcare system stretched beyond capacity. Shortages of supplies—already critical before the pandemic—made it even more difficult to combat the virus effectively.
Moms Against Poverty, through its local NGO partner Nikgaman Jamshid Charity, has been working tirelessly to source and distribute essential equipment to hospitals and public institutions across Iran.
Thanks to generous supporters, over $230,000 has been invested in medical aid for Iranian hospitals. These funds helped procure life-support equipment such as ventilators, dialysis machines, and electrocardiograms. Specifically, $100,808.61 went toward medical machinery, while $73,491.51 was used to purchase personal protective equipment donations for Iran, including face shields, isolation clothing, surgical gowns, and masks.
While hospitals continue to run dangerously low on PPE, Moms Against Poverty is committed to subsidizing these supplies to keep frontline workers and patients safe.
Moms Against Poverty’s nonprofit pandemic response extends beyond hospitals. The organization has also provided $34,330.75 worth of PPE and $22,165.19 in cleaning supplies to public orphanages and homeless shelters—facilities where self-isolation is nearly impossible and the virus spreads rapidly.
For many vulnerable individuals in these institutions, daily survival leaves little room for health precautions. This initiative is crucial to interrupting community spread in high-risk environments.
The generosity of Latter-Day Saints Charities (LDS) has significantly amplified Moms Against Poverty’s efforts. LDS Charities recently granted $100,000 to provide PPE to hospitals in seven provinces. This brings their total support for the Iranian people—dating back to last year’s floods—to $510,000. Their continued compassion has made it possible to reach more people, faster.
So far, nearly 10,000 facemasks and hundreds of liters of disinfectant have been distributed. But the need is still overwhelming. With limited ventilators and medical infrastructure, Iran’s health system remains fragile in the face of prolonged crisis.
How NGOs support COVID-19 relief in Iran depends on continued public generosity. Moms Against Poverty is one of just two U.S.-based nonprofits with an on-the-ground team in Iran. Your support is vital to reaching the next phase of aid.
