MAP continues it’s support of children and families affected by last years floods in Lorestan, Golestan, Khuzestan, Fars and more

By Daniel Judge

Repeated coastal and river surges, along with torrential rains, resulted in widespread flash flooding across over 80% of Iran’s provinces, in March 2019. Four provinces in particular — Golestan, Fars, Khuzestan, and Lorestan — sustained significant agricultural and infrastructure damage, Golestan, alone, receiving 70% of their annual rainfall in a single day1.

Throughout Iran, hundreds of thousands of families were forced to evacuate, as living conditions wouldn’t permit them to stay. Roads were covered with water, bridges collapsed, dams overflowed, and many homes were destroyed. Sadly, at least seventy people were killed despite relief efforts and coordinated evacuation.

Thanks to everyone’s contributions, Moms Against Poverty (MAP) provided swift emergency aid to disadvantaged families affected by flooding. Over $380,000 of emergency aid such as; food, basic provisions and clean drinking water were distributed to areas with damaged farmland and scarce resources. Hundreds of pieces of rehabilitation equipment, such as wheelchairs and crutches, along with medicine, were sent to hospitals and sick bays. Furthermore, mattresses and other amenities were provided to families that had lost their homes.

Part of this effort was thanks to a $150,000 generous grant from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This grant helped provide 6,762 emergency packages, including food, clothing, baby supplies, and basic sanitation equipment, distributed across the four critical provinces of Lorestan, Fars, Golestan and Khuzestan.

Thanks to our support, families and relief personnel were able to focus on rebuilding communities, rather than struggling for daily survival. Just as importantly, they were given hope and at least some measure of comfort to people who had lost everything and had nowhere to go.

One example of our impact is a family of five in Ahvas who had endured great difficulties. All three children and their father had become handicapped during the floods. Their roof nearly caved in and they lost most of the meager possessions they owned. They were unbelievably grateful when MAP provided them simple comforts, like food and clothing. The children especially were overjoyed when they realized that someone out there cared and would help them when no one else could. This is just one example of thousands of families that we’ve assisted through harsh times.

MAP prides itself on our thorough humanitarian aid. After emergency relief is distributed, MAP focuses on providing temporary shelters and aiding in reconstruction, especially because many of the affected families were already impoverished even before the flooding. Over the past year since then, MAP has joined in reconstruction efforts in the flood-stricken areas, in addition to our other various country wide projects. We focused on restoring public institutions, like schools, orphanages, and rehabilitation centers. Many of these projects have been completed, and the remainder will be finished by the end of 2020. A full list of MAP’s over $500,000 reconstructions projects, bringing the total flood effort contributions to over $900,000, is included at the end of the article.

Our efforts in these areas continue. For example, thanks to a second generous $64,000 grant from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, 2,000 children in ten flood-stricken areas have received coats and shoes for the most recent harsh winter months. Additionally, we are looking at initiatives supporting families and children who have lost their home, re-establish themselves into homes.

We are truly grateful to LDS Charities and all of you for your support of these desperate people. Disaster provides a unique opportunity for everyone to come together and help those in need. Again this year, flash flooding has plagued various provinces in Iran, especially Sistan-Baluchestan. Our teams have been providing emergency relief to families since the flooding began. Their situation is dire and any help you can give is appreciated: https://momsagainstpoverty.org/iran-flood-relief-2020/
