MAP Battles Hunger in America

By Daniel Judge

Over 16 million children in the U.S. struggle with food security every year. That’s one in five children who lack access to food and proper nutrition at some point each year. After seeing all the poverty that exists in developing countries and how fortunate we are in the First World, it’s easy to overlook the hardship that people face in our own backyard. Even in the U.S., many families struggle with basic needs. While many of these families’ children have access to free lunches and sometimes breakfast in school, they go hungry at home and during the summer when these programs are not available [i].

Research has shown that hunger impairs a child’s ability to concentrate and perform well in school. Children in elementary school facing hunger are twice as likely to repeat a grade. Not only that, but children who struggle with hunger are more likely to experience headaches, stomach aches, colds, ear infections, and fatigue on a daily basis.

Mom’s Against Poverty’s (MAP) Nutrition Outreach Program was developed to serve these impoverished children and families within local communities across the country. Many of these families struggle financially and have to choose between paying bills and putting food on the table. Our goal is to eliminate this decision by fulfilling the emergency food needs of these children and families

Our program provides children with healthy and nutritious protein and vegetables, not easily accessible through food pantries. The food is delivered to schools, community centers, and shelters on a regular basis and kept in a freezer and distributed to families based on demand.

Below are videos showing families and community members that MAP has impacted thanks to everyone’s support and contributions. There is no reason why anybody should go hungry in a country as prosperous as the United States. Our mission is to make that a reality.
