Hunger Crisis in Iran: How Food Aid is Saving Families

Moghaddas’s name means “blessed or sacred,” and despite her hardships, she remains hopeful. She lives with her family in a remote part of Sistan and Baluchestan Province, where they share a small rented room.

Her mother works tirelessly repairing sewing machines, struggling to cover basic needs and her husband’s medical expenses. The hunger crisis in Iran has made survival even harder, with food prices soaring and jobs disappearing.

Before COVID-19 devastated Iran’s fragile economy, Moghaddas’s brothers would sell small items on the streets after school to contribute to the family income. Since the pandemic, that income has disappeared, pushing them deeper into poverty.

Food Shortage in Iran: A Growing Concern

“These days, job scarcity, the lack of government support, and the high cost of living make it easy to become penniless,” said an aid worker.

With inflation at record highs, food shortage in Iran has become a life-threatening issue. Many families struggle to afford essentials like rice, bread, and meat. In response, Moms Against Poverty has distributed food packets to more than 2,000 families, providing critical relief.

Moghaddas’s most treasured possession is a doll—half her size, missing one eye. When a MAP team member saw her holding it tightly, they promised to bring her a new one on their next visit.

“Little Moghaddas and her brothers know that they are part of our extended family and that they are not alone,” said a MAP team member.

“These days job scarcity coupled with the lack of government support to assist the needy and the cost of healthcare makes it easy to become penniless,” said an aid worker.

The increasing economic impacts due to COVID-19 has led to an even greater food insecurity in Iran. With a focus on hunger relief in the country, Moms Against Poverty recently distributed food packets which included staples such as meat and rice to more than 2,000 families across Iran.

Moghaddas’s prized possession is a doll that’s half her size, fits perfectly in her arms and missing one eye. When a MAP teammember saw Moghaddas holding her doll so tightly, she promised that she’d bring her a new doll on her next visit.

“Little Moghaddas and her brothers understand that they are part of our extended families and they are not alone,” said a MAP teammember.
