In 2017, when Moms Against Poverty Cambodia (MAPC) transitioned its orphanage into a foster-based care system, it became clear that many children still needed daytime support. For this reason, MAPC established a free preschool in Cambodia, offering a safe space for children while their parents worked.
This program has been especially vital for single mothers in Cambodia who lack nearby relatives to help with childcare. Without affordable daycare options, many of these mothers face the impossible choice of leaving their young children home alone or missing work entirely.
The MAPC Preschool & Day School Program started with just five children from three families. By the end of 2018, six more children had joined. The COVID-19 pandemic forced MAPC to temporarily close its free preschool in Cambodia, but the team continued delivering food to families in need. Unfortunately, the closure had serious consequences.
One heartbreaking example is a 14-year-old girl living in an isolated area. With her parents leaving for work early in the morning and returning late at night, she was left completely alone every day. This was not an isolated case—many children faced similar struggles.
Recognizing the urgent need, MAPC reopened its Preschool & Day School with strict hygiene protocols, ensuring that children could return to a safe learning environment.
