Even in one of the wealthiest nations in the world, food insecurity among children in the U.S. remains a critical issue. More than 40 million Americans live below the poverty line, and nearly 10% of families experience hunger each year.
With the economic fallout from COVID-19, the situation has rapidly worsened. Feeding America projects that the number of food-insecure Americans could jump from 37 million to 54 million in 2020. Parents are being forced to choose between paying rent and feeding their children, and food banks are struggling to keep up with demand.
Before the pandemic, free school meal programs and food banks played a crucial role in keeping children fed. However, with schools closing and food donations declining, families have fewer options. The rise in unemployment has pushed millions more into food insecurity, leading to a record surge in hunger relief requests.
To combat this, Moms Against Poverty has expanded its Nutrition and Hygiene Program, working year-round to provide fresh produce, protein, and nutritious meals to struggling families. Moms Against Poverty partners with schools, shelters, and community centers to ensure children receive the food they need.
