In the small village of Prek Lvea, located an hour from Phnom Penh, Cambodia, finding qualified teachers for rural schools has always been a challenge. Teachers commuting from Phnom Penh must endure a demanding daily journey—taking a ferry across the Mekong River and driving through the dusty countryside. Due to the difficulty in recruiting and retaining teachers, Moms Against Poverty Cambodia shifted its focus to hiring educators within the local community.
After months of searching for a primary-level English teacher, a moment of hope emerged when Sok Ry, a Moms Against Poverty Cambodia student since 2012, stepped forward. Having already worked as an assistant English teacher, she boldly asked why she had never been considered for the teaching position. Though she lacked formal qualifications at the time, her dedication and reliability convinced the organization to take a chance on her.
Sok Ry’s journey began in Battambang Province, near the Thai border. Raised by her grandmother while her parents sought migrant work in Thailand, she faced many hardships. Her family’s financial instability led to her mother’s imprisonment for illegal immigration and her father’s disappearance for years. During this crisis, her grandmother sought help from Moms Against Poverty Cambodia, ensuring that Sok Ry and her younger brother, Eten, could remain together.
With the support of Cambodian rural education initiatives, Sok Ry thrived. Now in 12th grade at a high school in Kandal Province, she actively participates in music, English, and computer programs supported by Moms Against Poverty Cambodia. She even co-produced a song called “My Life,” showcasing her passion for the arts. However, her true calling lies in education—teaching young children with backgrounds similar to hers.
Now a teacher of introductory English classes, Sok Ry’s story highlights the importance of education programs in Cambodia that empower local students to become future educators. By giving opportunities to passionate individuals within the community, we help build a sustainable education system in rural areas.
With plans to pursue a university degree in English education, Sok Ry embodies the impact of supporting local teachers in Cambodian schools.
